The
volcanic islands of Vanuatu are a source of wonder
for tourists from around the globe. Deep under the
formation of the world's most accessible, active
volcano, the earth' s crust is being split and cracked
like an egg breaking open. Thundering booms of molten
lava shoot from deep within its crater as it spews
forth liquid fire and clouds of volcanic ash.
Welcome
to Mt. Yasur: Location: Tanna Island in the Islands
of Fire!
Of
course, the first step is to fly to Tanna with Unity
Airlines. All prices quoted for your Tanna Island
Volcano Tour include courtescy pickup from
(and re-delivery to) your resort or hotel in Port
Vila. So, you will be collected from your
hotel/resort (within the Port Vila Metropolitan
area) first thing in the morning, then taken to
Bauerfield International Airport in Vila, where
you will board the Unity Airlines plane for your
scenic one hour flight to Tanna Island.

After
some happy greetings from the local Tananese, you
will be taken for some light refreshments (included
in the price of your tour) before heading off on
your 4WD drive adventure across the island to the
very active Yasur Volcano. On your way, you'll pass
through local villages living much the same way
as they have always done on Tanna Island. Be sure
to wave and expect to be greeted by a friendly wave
and smile in return - this applies to men, women
and children.
Below
is a local Tananese woman preparing a traditional,
custom dish.
The climb to the summit of Mount Yasur is only short.
The gradient is quite steep while the ground is
uneven and scattered with volcanic rocks and ash.
Still, experience shows that most men, women and
even young children have little trouble scaling
the summit. Chances are you'll feel quite invigorated
by the time you get to the crater's edge. While
the weather is likely to be warm in the daytime,
after sunset it can become quite cool at the top
of the volcano, especially during April through
to November.

the base of the summit to the top.
Long
before you reach Mount Yasur, you'll have heard
the unmistakeable sound of this ancient Vanuatu
volcano booming out across the landscape but it
is only when you reach the crater's edge that you
fully appreciate this awesome, natural wonder. A
local Guide will give you a few tips on where to
go or not go.
Obviously,
it's a good idea to keep well back from the crater's
edge!
